Our journey continues to one of Egypt’s most extraordinary archaeological treasures—the Karnak Temple Complex ✨, the second most visited site in the country. This vast religious sanctuary is one of the most historically significant monuments in Egypt. 🌅 After breakfast, our first stop will be the magnificent Temple of Edfu 🏛️, dedicated to Horus, the falcon-headed god. Construction of this remarkable temple began in 237 BC and was completed in 57 BC. It is the second-largest temple in Egypt, surpassed only by the Temple of Amun-Ra at Karnak, and is considered the best-preserved temple from the Hellenistic period.
For centuries, sand and Nile silt gradually buried the temple beneath as much as 12 meters (39 feet) of sediment. By the time of Napoleon’s expedition in 1798, only the tops of its massive pylons were visible. In 1860, a French archaeological expedition began excavating the site, revealing one of Egypt’s greatest ancient treasures.
Later, we will sail to the fascinating Temple of Kom Ombo 🐊🦅, uniquely dedicated to two gods: Sobek, the crocodile-headed god of fertility and the Nile, and Horus the Elder (Haroeris), the falcon-headed god of kingship, the sky, war, and hunting. Unlike any other temple in Egypt, Kom Ombo was designed with perfect symmetry along a central axis, creating two mirrored halves to honor both deities equally.
Modern efforts to protect the temple from the rising waters of the Nile have uncovered evidence of its strong Roman influence, including the discovery of a bust of Emperor Marcus Aurelius.
After our visits, we will return to the cruise ship and continue sailing toward Aswan, enjoying another relaxing evening on the legendary Nile River. 🌴🚢
